Friday Letter
September 2, 2010
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our students have been good-natured, serious pupils through this oppressive heat wave. The excitement of new school beginnings has overshadowed the clammy discomfort of the weather. As I stated in my letter yesterday, we are making every effort to protect our students’ health during this time. Teachers are keeping their rooms as cool as possible by adjusting windows, lights and shades and operating the ceiling fans. Large fans are circulating air in the hallways. During recess, we have limited student play to the equipment area, the swings and the garden. The fields and blacktop have been off limits. We have encouraged students to seek shade and play quietly. As always, we remind them to stay hydrated. Relief appears to be in sight this weekend with the coming of the hurricane!
We would like to thank our second and third grade parents for coming to the Open House yesterday afternoon. Our last Open House for Grades 4 and 5 will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 6:00PM to 7:00PM.
The program will begin with a whole group meeting in the cafeteria at 6:00PM. The administration will speak first and then introduce non-classroom staff. Classroom visits will follow. While you’re touring the building, be sure to view our Koi Pond in the courtyard. Also, don’t forget to introduce yourselves to our new assistant principal, Mr. Hunt and our administrative intern, Mrs. Austin.
At each Open House, PTA representatives will be in the lobby to answer questions and take membership forms. Your membership does not mean that you have to volunteer, it simply shows support for the school. The first PTA family event is the Welcome Back Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, September 22, from 6:30PM to 8:00PM. This is a time to meet many South School staff and families. All are welcome to attend the monthly PTA meetings. The first PTA Meeting will be on Wednesday, October 13.
School Portrait Day is Thursday, September 16. This is a proof program, meaning that you order photos after reviewing the proof. Therefore, no money is due on that day.
Update on Bella Tucker: Bella visited school yesterday after hours! She looked fabulous! She saw her new classroom and ventured out to the Sunflower House in the Apprentice Gardeners’ area on the playground. Bella has a rigorous, daily rehabilitation schedule at Spaulding Rehabilitation Center, with a bit of a break on weekends. She will be making regular visits home now, which is great news.
Fifth grade runners: Your Cross-Country permission forms are due on Thursday, September 9. The Big Race is scheduled for Wednesday, October 13!
Sincerely, Enjoy the four-day weekend! There is no school tomorrow and Monday.
