Moose Hill Registration

Registration for the 2010-2011 school year is going on now for Moose Hill School. If you have a child who will be five years old by September 30, 2010 and you live in the town of Londonderry, you can enroll your child at Moose Hill School.  You may call Moose Hill at 437-5855, stop in at Moose Hill School between 8:00 – 4:30 or email the director, Bonnie Breithaupt at bbreithaupt@londonderry.org to request a registration packet.  Be sure to include your child’s name, birth date and Londonderry address when making your request.

The kindergarten program has two sessions - a morning session and an afternoon session.  The AM session meets from 8:45AM – 11:20AM and the PM session meets from 12:30PM – 3:05PM.  Session is determined by where you live in town.  If your child attends a daycare, the daycare should be in the same section of town as your residency, as we cannot make changes in session for daycare reasons without affecting the class size.

For further information call Moose Hill School at 437-5855

The High School track will undergo total reconstruction this summer, and this project will take several months to complete.  Therefore, the track and the inner field area will be closed until the new surface has been installed and it has had appropriate time to cure.

When the track is ready to be re-opened, we will post a notice on the School District web page and on LEO 21.  At this time, we expect the work to be completed in early to mid September.

JUDY’S TUNE ROOM COMING TO LONDONDERRY RADIO

Londonderry families have a new entertainment option on weekend mornings thanks to students in the radio program at Londonderry High School and New Hampshire children's musician Judy Pancoast. Beginning this Saturday, Pancoast will host "Judy's Tune Room," a radio program for kids and families, on LEO-103, the Londonderry School District’s radio station. The program can be heard at 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM on Saturdays and Sundays in the Londonderry area at 102.9 FM, and heard online worldwide at http://www.londonderry.org/leo/radio_stream.cfm

Karen Robinson, TV and Radio Broadcasting teacher at LHS, approached Pancoast in December about collaborating on a production of "Judy's Tune Room," which had previously aired on another New Hampshire radio station. Pancoast had been looking for a new radio home for the show and a plan to produce the show with the assistance of students fell into place.

In addition to writing and performing music for children and families for the past fifteen years, Pancoast has been a professional radio announcer since 1980. She says this program helps her combine the best of both worlds.

"I hope to not only entertain children with the best music from national and international artists, but I want to feature local children and celebrate their accomplishments," says Pancoast. "One of the features is "The Throne Room," where we'll celebrate a different child in each show. Parents, teachers and community leaders are welcome to suggest children to be featured. They don't have to have achieved something major, like winning an award. We'll honor kids who have learned a new skill, shown a kindness, or have somehow made the world a better place for others. This show is all about the kids." Students at Londonderry’s elementary schools will be featured in a regular segment of the show.

The show is produced by LHS junior Jordan Shea who has enrolled in an Independent Study Program specifically dedicated to give her the time necessary to create a new show monthly. Working closely with Pancoast, Shea records the pieces of the program, then edits them together with the finished piece just under an hour in length. Each program includes music, jokes, a community calendar of family-friendly events and activities, and short interviews with local students. In the March show Matthew Thornton second graders in Judi Lynch’s class share their thoughts on what they would do with a pot of gold. Shea intends to produce the show next year as well.

Upcoming shows will include live performances by local children’s entertainers recorded in the radio studio at LHS.

Pancoast and Shea are looking for contributions to the show in the form of kids' jokes, birthday announcements, nominations for The Throne Room and notices of family-oriented events for "The Activity Room" calendar. Contributions may be emailed to judystuneroom@comcast.net.

LONDONDERRY SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFERS SUMMER ENRICHMENTS AND COMPUTER CAMPS

The Londonderry School District is pleased to announce that it will offer a variety of enrichment opportunities to students this summer.  Open to all levels K-12, the purpose of this self-supported program is to promote student strengths in the academic areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and/or other electives and to expose students to new areas of interest not typically included during the regular school year.  Additionally, as in the past, students entering grades 2-8 will continue to have the opportunity to participate in Londonderry Computer Camp.

Twenty-six enrichment offerings promise interest for any student at any level.  Some offerings at the elementary level will include Camp Kindergarten, the popular Teddy Bear Club for primary students on teddy bear literature, writing, games and crafts.  Others include a drama production of It's Summer off Broadway, learning about basic cooking techniques in Cooking with Mrs. Gallagher, as well as a variety of fun filled reading options.  At intermediate grades, students who have an appreciation in theatre, music, and the arts may wish to test their talents in Improv with the Drama Club, Piano/Keyboarding, or participate in Calligraphy.  Students who appreciate technology, the environment or science may chose from Science Inquiry & Design:  Investigate Common (and not so common) Optical Illusions, Mathematics Outdoors, and Nature by Design.  Other offerings include Scratch:  Creating Your Own Animation, and Fitness Training.  At the high school level, those students with a passion in technology, engineering, and physics may wish to take Robotics.  Students will construct robots using Boe-Bot Kits by Parallax, Inc.  Other offerings at the high school level include What's Your Story? where students explore the techniques of digital storytelling.  Computer campers may choose to explore Creating with KidPix, Digital Story Telling, Video Editing with iMovie, or Robotics and Programming.

Summer Enrichments will be held mornings and afternoons at various times and dates in schools throughout the district from June 28th to July 30, 2010.  Computer camp will be held in the AM during the week of July 12th.  Specific information about offerings, fees, and registration will be e-mailed, sent home at elementary, and e-mailed at middle school/high school levels along with newsletters.  Parents may also pick up materials through any participating teacher, at any school office throughout the district, town hall, town library or may go online at www.londonderry.org.  Registration and fees for both Summer Enrichment and Computer Camp will be collected through the Londonderry District Office through June 12, 2010.  Enrollment is limited by enrichment or camp type, so don’t wait, apply today!

Administrative Appointments/Leadership Succession

TO:           The Greater Londonderry Community

FROM:     Nate Greenberg

RE:           Administrative Appointments/Leadership Succession

DATE:     April 20, 2010

As you are aware, Mark Blount our Assistant Superintendent has accepted the Superintendency of the Shaker Regional School District.  Mark has made significant contributions to our district these past seven years.  He has been a superior educational leader and his appointment as Superintendent in Shaker Regional is justly deserved.  I am positive he will be a truly outstanding Superintendent of Schools.  Thank you, Mark, for a job well done.

Having known that Mark was a strong candidate over a month ago, I began to think about his replacement and leadership succession.

Thus, in order to continue to promote and sustain educational and organizational improvement and excellence we have over the years implemented a systemic focus on the development of talented people within our organization predicated on the philosophy, focus and culture of our school system.

The components of that system include:

                        Disciplined People

                        Disciplined Thought

                        Disciplined Action

                        Adhering to Inputs

                        Tracking Progress

Driving Individuals to Higher Levels of Performance and Impact

Understanding the Vision (future state of organization)

Understanding the Mission (reason organization exists)

Understanding and Adhering to our Values/Core Beliefs

Developing and Implementing the Strategic Plan

District/School/Personal Goals aligned with the Strategic Plan, Vision, Mission and Core Beliefs,                                     including accountability, trust, commitment and loyalty

Our daily operations include opportunities through mentoring at all administrative levels including internships for advanced degrees and aspiring administrators; staff development focusing on curriculum/instruction, supervision/evaluation, analysis of data, leadership skills, technology/instructional technology, formative and summative evaluations, internships, collegial and coordinated development of Strategic Plans, future casting, facilities, educational law, special education, decision making, policy development and operations and procedures.

This systemic, intentional and focused method of operation is designed to promote the development and enhancement of leadership skills, foster a positive, focused forward looking school system and ensure that not only do we have the right people on the bus, but that we have them in the right seats to ensure we fulfill our mission.

After a great deal of thought, I have recommended and received approval from the Board for the following appointments.

Andy Corey, LMS Principal, will become Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.  Andy who is this year’s Middle School Principal of the Year, brings a strong background in curriculum and instruction having served as Principal of Hudson Catholic School, Dean of Instruction at Dover High School and as Principal of Londonderry Middle School since 2004.  Prior to his administrative positions, he was a Math/Business Teacher from 1986-1998.

Andy’s strong curriculum and instruction background, outstanding administrative and interpersonal skills, as well as his knowledge of our district’s programs and services and strong relationships within our community, will make him an outstanding Assistant Superintendent.

Andy’s appointment left vacant the Middle School Principalship.  Once again we have an outstanding educational leader who has the background, skills, and knowledge to provide outstanding leadership.  That person is Richard Zacchilli presently Principal of North School.

Rich’s extensive educational experience includes teaching at the Middle School level; Assistant Principal and Athletic Director experience at that level and of course, an Assistant Principalship (1994-1997 at Matthew Thornton) and Principalship (1997-Present at North School) in Londonderry since 1994.  Rich has been and continues to be involved in and provides leadership in a myriad of curriculum and instruction initiatives, strategic planning and district-wide initiatives.  It should also be noted that Rich was a 2007 Principal of the Year Finalist.

His extensive administrative experience and deep understanding of curriculum and instruction, knowledge of child development, strong interpersonal skills and community roots will make him an outstanding Middle School Principal.

Mary Coltin, our Assistant Principal at North School since 1994 and the 2009 Assistant Principal of the Year, will be taking over the reins as Principal of North School.  Mary has been intimately involved with our three tier reading model, Strategic Plan development, District-wide technology initiatives, and Co-Chair of the District’s Curriculum Advisory Committee.  Her in-depth knowledge of elementary curriculum and instruction, her immense popularity and respect from students, faculty, staff, parents and the greater North School community make her the ideal choice to replace Richard Zacchilli.

As our outstanding Assistant Superintendent leaves his seat on the Londonderry bus to transfer to the Shaker Regional bus, I believe and the Board is in concurrence that we have the right people on our bus who are fully prepared to change their seats and provide outstanding leadership and service to our students, faculty and staff.  They are: Andy Corey, Richard Zacchilli and Mary Coltin.
