The mission of the Library Media Center is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of information and ideas.

The Library Media Center provides a comprehensive collection of resources to support the curriculum, to promote an appreciation of reading, and to develop information literacy skills. Additionally, the Library Media Specialists work collaboratively with teachers to reinforce these skills.

Information Literacy

An information literate student knows how to access information efficiently and effectively; evaluate information critically and competently; and, use information effectively and critically.

First Grade Second Grade Third Grade
Fourth Grade   Fifth Grade

Grade 1

A student who is information literate in first grade:

  • Identify parts of a book (spine, spine label, title page, table of contents)
  • With assistance, distinguish between fiction and nonfiction
  • Frame simple questions related to a topic of interest or assignment, with assistance
  • Observe the gathering of information by communicating with others using telecommunications
  • With assistance, locate the copyright page and symbol

Grade 2

A student who is information literate in second grade:

  • Identify the index
  • With assistance, demonstrate the use of the table of contents
  • Write &/or state a simple citation (author & title) to indicate an information source
  • Develop questions & follow-up questions to solve an information problem
  • Locate fiction & non-fiction sections of the library
  • Locate the copyright page and draw the copyright symbol

Grade 3

A student who is information literate in third grade:

  • Identify a variety of information sources – books, periodicals, electronic resources, internet
  • With assistance, identify the need for information when solving a problem
  • With assistance, locate & retrieve print materials in the library (fiction, nonfiction, reference, & biography)
  • With assistance, use alphabetical indices or menus to access print & electronic resources
  • Demonstrate the use of the table of contents
  • Demonstrate the use of an atlas, dictionary, & encyclopedia
  • With assistance, identify keywords in order to locate information
  • With assistance, complete a bibliography card
  • With assistance, identify keywords & phrases to record information (notetaking)

Grade 4

A student who is information literate in fourth grade:

  • Identify the appropriate sources of information
  • Access information from print, non-print, &/or electronic resources
  • Brainstorm to develop a set of questions, which are carefully aligned & focused on a designated main idea
  • Demonstrate the ability to locate specific information from a variety of resources
  • Demonstrate the use of an index in a print resource
  • Identify keywords for locating information
  • With assistance, identify keywords & phrases to record information (notetaking)

Grade 5

A student who is information literate in fifth grade:

  • Determine the information needed to solve a problem
  • Use a variety of information sources: print (almanac, dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas), visual, persons, etc.
  • Identify appropriate topics and keywords
  • Find information from a given resource alphabetically, chronologically, topically, or numerically
  • With limited assistance, locate information on the internet
  • Identify the parts of a nonfiction book (glossary, index, table of contents)
  • Independently complete bibliography cards
  • Identify keywords & phrases to record information (notetaking)
  • Be able to define "plagiarism"
