Special Education BAS PFS
Special Education Teachers & Program

The Special Education Program is designed to meet the individual needs of students identified as having specific educational handicaps. An Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is developed for each student receiving special academic assistance and/or related services. Londonderry Middle School is fortunate to have a variety of programs and supportive services available to the special needs population. Special education staff members, guidance personnel, administrators, teachers, and parents work together as a team, each bringing his/her expertise to each individual case.

Special education programs provide intensive support services to those students who have difficulty meeting success. All students who receive services are included in the regular classroom to the maximum extent appropriate. A continum of special education programs are available to meet a variety of student needs.

The special education program is designed to provide supportive tutorial services as well as some corrective and/or compensatory strategies to pupils identified as having specific educational handicaps. The objective is to assist these students in order to ensure that they meet the optimal amount of success accessing the general curriculum. To this end, special educators are assigned to teams and work collaboratively with the teachers in the regular classroom.

Cooperative planning and teaching among special and regular educators results in curriculum, presentation, and assessment modifications, which benefit all students. In addition, the entire team of five teachers meets with identified students for a core-tutoring period every other day. This provides an opportunity for reteaching and extra help in small group and individualized instructional settings.

The Program for Success (PFS) assists students who have learning difficulties resulting from emotional handicaps. The program, implemented by a special educator and counselor in collaboration with classroom teachers, addresses the social and emotional needs of students within the school environment.

The BAS program services developmentally and mentally delayed early adolescents. The program focuses on functional academics, pre-vocational skills, community awareness, and developing personal independence.

In addition to the above programs, all pupils with special needs are provided professional support services, as needed, by the following personnel: a speech and language therapist, reading specialists, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a psychologist, guidance counselors, and a school nurse. All special programs are supervised by the Director of Pupil Services and the Special Education Director.
