Benchmarks

Information Literacy

An information literate student knows how to access information efficiently and effectively; evaluate information critically and competently; and, use information effectively and critically.

Benchmarks have been established at each grade level. An authentic assessment of the student's skills occurs in 7th grade during a social studies research unit.

Please take a few minutes to see what information literacy looks like at each of our grade levels.
Sixth Grade Seventh Grade Eighth Grade
Information Literacy Benchmarks (Grade 6)

A student who is information literate in sixth grade:

  • Identifies topics and subtopics using brainstorming
  • Writes preliminary questions
  • Reads for understanding of topic
  • Re-phrases questions
  • Uses author, title, subject and keyword features of the OPAC
  • Organizes information using a graphic organizer
  • Records information using keywords and/or phrases
  • Gathers information from a variety of print and electronic resources
  • Synthesizes information from more than one source
  • Maintains a working bibliography on formatted cards or "rainbow sheet"
Information Literacy Benchmarks (Grade 7)

A student who is information literate in seventh grade:

  • Develops research questions
  • Organizes information in topics and subtopics
  • Applies Boolean logic when using electronic databases and search engines
  • Searches for information using various print and electronic resources
  • Maintains a working bibliography on formatted cards or "rainbow sheet"
  • Records information using keywords and/or phrases
  • Synthesizes information from more than one source
  • Exhibits legal and ethical behavior
Information Literacy Benchmarks (Grade 8)

A student who is information literate in eighth grade:

  • Develops research questions
  • Defines the information needed to solve a problem
  • Selects sources appropriate for the information needed
  • Applies Boolean logic when using electronic databases and search engines
  • Searches for information using various print and electronic resources
  • Maintains a working bibliography on formatted cards or "rainbow sheet"
  • Extracts relevant information and records information using keywords and/or phrases
  • Synthesizes information from more than one source
  • Credits information sources used - "Works Cited" page
  • Presents information in a variety of formats
  • Exhibits legal and ethical behavior
