Dear Parents / Guardians:

Students received their first semester report cards on Friday, January 27, 2012 in their A Period classes. On your child's report card you will see the grade earned and credit awarded. Guidance counselors will be conducting course orientations with students going through the Program of Studies from February 7th - 9th in classrooms. Course selections are due February 17th for the 2012 - 2013 school year. Please review course selections with your child and encourage them to also work with their teachers and guidance counselors in choosing a challenging academic schedule while pursuing electives in areas of interest.

There were some wonderful highlights in January, and February promises to be filled with a variety of community events. Led once again by Mr. Juster, we are very proud of our 232 students and staff who participated in the Pantene Beautiful Lengths hair donation by cutting at least eight inches of their hair to help cancer patients have access to 77 real hair wigs this year. Mr. Juster was recognized by the Rotary Club as a Paul Harris Fellow for "significant assistance among the peoples of the world". To date LHS has 1,015 donors. As representatives of this effort, Shannon Corcoran, Katherine Lasocki, Kirsten Malloy, Hunter Wertz, Haley Skov and Mr. Juster have been invited by the Governor to attend the State of the State Address as special guests in the gallery, and will then be part of a luncheon at the State House. For a complete list of donors, please visit: http://www.londonderry.org/assets/documents/common/beautiful_lengths.pdf

We had a wonderful Semi-Formal dance put on by Student Council. The Teacher Talent show was a big hit put on by Mr. Wenger and the Math Team. 8th Grade Parent Night was a huge success thanks to the efforts of Mr. Dolphin and his guidance team. And our Unified Basketball team made up of students with intellectual disabilities along with student mentors is off to a great start in their first season. This is an NHIAA recognized sport for these student-athletes. Our Swim Team led by Ms. Ewen celebrated their Senior Night and will soon compete in the Division I Meet.

LHS DECA had four teams who placed in the Top 25 for the North Atlantic Region in the Stock Market Challenge, qualifying them for the Nationals in Salt Lake City, UT. Colleen Clark was named the Daughters of the American Revolution "Good Citizen" award winner. Amanda Mitchell won a writing contest at SNHU. Her short story will be published in the spring edition of The Amoskeag (the college's literary journal). Finally, Matt Dalzell, Lindsay O'Donnell, and Charlotte O'Neill were named semi-finalists for the US Presidential Scholars. Our January Students and Staff Members of the Month are Jacqueline Curtin (Gr. 9), Elizabeth Menard (Gr. 10), Andrew Beliveau (Gr. 11), Kirsten Malloy (Gr. 12), MaryKate Heavey (Teacher), and Wendy Calnan (Staff). Congratulations to all these fantastic individuals!

February events include NH Jazz All-State from Feb. 2nd - Feb. 4th. 13 LHS students will do the Penguin Plunge on Feb. 4th. The LHS Drama Production of The Wedding Singer at Adams Opera House in Derry, NH will run from February 16th - 18th. Tickets are available now! Dollars for Scholars will be having a phone-a-thon to raise money for graduating seniors Jan. 30th - Feb. 2nd and Feb. 6th - 9th. The Night of Jazz will be held on Feb. 23rd and school vacation is the week of February 27th. There are also winter athletic games nearly every night this month at LHS.

Sincerely,
Jason Parent
