LHS Library Media Center
The mission of the Library Media Center is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of information and ideas. The Library Media Center provides a comprehensive collection of resources to support the curriculum, to promote an appreciation of reading, and to develop information literacy skills. Additionally, the Library Media Specialists work collaboratively with teachers to develop projects that reinforce these skills.
- Independently develop the topic, problem or question to be researched
- Identify and develop criteria to select and prioritize sources
- Use effective searches for print and electronic sources
- Develop and use criteria to analyze quality of information
- Select information appropriate to the question or problem
- Select and develop the most effective form of presentation

Students can go the the LMC anytime before and after school. During the school day, a pass is required. From study hall, students get a pass from their study hall teacher. During their lunch period, students get a pass from the Cafeteria monitor. Once students arrive in the Library, they are expected to stay for the entire period.

The Library Media Center provides students and faculty access to a comprehensive collection of resources selected to support the curriculum.
Print resources include:

- Laser Disk programs
Computers:
- The Library Media Center provides 30 computers for searching the library catalog, searching online databases, accessing the Internet, and using software programs such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe PageMaker and Adobe Photoshop.
The Library Media Center coordinates the equipment used in the building. This equipment includes:
- Video and digital cameras
- Video and data projectors
- Overhead projectors
- Televisions
- VCR and DVD players
- Laser disk players
- CD players
- Cassette players
- Laminating machine
- Lettering machine
- Satellite downlink facility
- Distance Learning equipment
Information Literacy Benchmarks (Grade 9 - 12)
Independently formulates topic, question or problem to be researched, incorporating existing knowledge and revising topic according to information gathered. Skills include:
- Developing questions
- Determining topics/subtopics
- Determining keywords
Develops appropriate search strategies to efficiently locate information. Skills include:
- Recognizing type of information needed
- Knowledge of variety of sources of information
- Boolean logic/ keyword searches
- Indexes/Directories
Evaluates and selects information appropriate to the topic. Skills include:
- Determining relevancy of information
- Determining authority/credibility
- Determining bias
- Determining currency
- Note taking
Synthesizes (assembles) facts, opinions, and point of view appropriate to one's work. Skills include:
- Developing topic
- Incorporate sufficient information
- Utilize appropriate format/organization
- Demonstrates knowledge of topic
Uses information responsibly and ethically. Skills include:
- Using complete bibliographic citations
- Adhering to copyright restrictions for print, non-print, and electronic sources
Opportunities to develop and apply these skills will be provided through a wide range of courses across all areas of the curriculum.
